In this scenario, you might decide to install the important and recommended updates but not to install the optional update because the computer does not have a Silicon Integrated Services (SiS) Accelerated Graphics port. In this case, you select the check boxes beside the updates you want to install, as shown in Figure 12-3 (above).

Okay, so perhaps it s not the most functional player in the world, but it s still very impressive when you consider how little work we needed to pull it off. Think how long it would have taken to code all the UI and effects using Java or C++. And that s before we even think about getting video playback working.

The Windows Update dialog box categorizes all nonoptional updates as important. Provided the setting to include recommended updates is enabled, this classification covers both important and recommended updates. However, the Check For Updates dialog box differentiates between important and recommended updates.

When you click each registered alert, the bottom of the Alerts view provides Alert Information, which contains a detailed description of the selected alert.

ISA Server includes a large number of predefined alerts. You can modify the existing alert definitions by defining events that will trigger the alert, and by defining the actions when the alert is triggered. You can also create new alert definitions.

You can install the selected updates by clicking Install in the View Available Updates dialog box or Install Updates in the Windows Update dialog box. (The Install Updates command is only available if there are important or recommended updates ready to be installed.) Windows Vista downloads the updates, as shown in Figure 12-4, and then installs them. Although a standard user can download and install important and recommended updates, elevated privileges are required to stop a download or installation.

An alert definition lists the specific actions or notifications that occur when an event takes place on the ISA Server computer. During ISA Server installation, alert definitions are defined for a variety of built-in general events. Several of these events allow you to define a more specific alert by configuring conditions related to the event. For example, ISA Server includes the preconfigured Intrusion Detected event. The associated alert is configured to report on any intrusion detected. You may want to redefine this

Time for another detour section. This one doesn t directly relate to the material in this chapter, but it s a very useful UI trick, and this seems an opportune moment to mention it. Like Java, JavaFX has a small set of standard fonts with dependable names and appearances. general alert to provide additional specific notifications related to all port-scan attacks, ping-of-death attacks, or other conditions.

JavaFX allows us to embed fonts directly inside our application, guaranteeing availability and appearance. Figure 6.15 shows an example. To embed a typeface we need a font Figure 6.15 Text rendered using an embedded file in a format such as TrueType. The TrueType font file file is not loaded directly from a URL or an input stream but assigned an alias from which it can be referenced like any standard or operating system font. This is a two-step process:

Alert events define actions that occur on the computer running ISA Server that can raise alerts. Alert conditions are additional criteria applied by ISA Server when alert events happen. For example, DNS intrusion is an alert event. Additional conditions that you can apply to the alert event include raising an alert when any DNS intrusion attempt is detected, or raising an alert only when specific DNS intrusion attempts are detected. You can also modify the event trigger-threshold limits. The trigger threshold refers to how many times the event should occur before the alert is triggered and how long to wait before issuing the alert again.
